Paul Yerys, M.D.

Dr. Paul Yerys is a graduate of the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. He interned at the Columbia University Division of Bellevue Hospital. He then went on to do general surgery for approximately a four year residency at Meadowbrook Hospital in Nassau County and then on to Orthopedic Surgery at Nassau Hospital in Mineola.

He commenced his practice of Orthopedics in approximately 1970 and rapidly developed an interest in Sports Medicine, having swam competitively at the High School level and at CCNY as an undergraduate. He began intensively concentrating on Sports Medicine in approximately 1973 and was the original orthopedic surgeon for the New York Nets when they were housed on Long Island.

In 1974, he began using a brand new instrument known as an arthroscope and was trained in the use of this by Dr. Robert W. Jackson, who is the Canadian physician who brought arthroscopy to the Western Hemisphere from Japan. Beginning in approximately, 1975, Dr. Yerys’ interests in Sports Medicine and arthroscopy surgery reached a point where most of his practice was limited to these areas.

He was the Director of the Sports Medicine Clinic at the Nassau County Medical Center for approximately 20 years and is an original member of the International Arthroscopic Association and a founding member of the Arthroscopic Association of North America. He has served on multiple committees, especially those relating to education and training of residents and physicians in arthroscopic techniques.

Dr. Yerys has been extremely innovative in arthroscopic surgery, having developed operative procedures and arthroscopic instruments. He also has lectured around the United States and in multiple areas around the world on arthroscopic surgery and arthroscopic techniques. He is still involved in teaching both worldwide and nationwide, both for international groups of orthopedic surgeons, the Arthroscopic Association of North America and has been invited by a variety of local medical associations to lecture and comment on arthroscopic topics. He has also written numerous published articles on arthroscopic surgery.

Dr. Yerys’ abilities in arthroscopic surgery extend not only to the knee, but just about every other joint that is arthroscoped. This includes the shoulder, the ankle, the hip and the elbow. Because of his extensive background in knee surgery, he also performs a great many total knee placements during the year. Other areas he has participated in have been the support staff' for the International Special Olympics, the New York State Empire Games and the International Polo Matches held at Bethpage Park.

Dr. Yerys actively participates in the education of residents as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the State University Stony Brook Medical Center. He also serves as the Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at North Shore University Hospital at Syosset. Dr. Yerys is also the senior partner and founder of Island Sports Medicine and has been listed as one of the best orthopedic Surgeons in the area.
